How to motivate young readers to love to read

For the last three years we have been testing the Reading Incentive Kit™ reading motivator (RIK™ for short) with dozens of young readers and the response has been overwhelmingly positive, both from children and from their parents. Children love reading with RIK because inside each kit is 5 to 9 small packages, each containing a surprise relating to the story and a few words of encouragement. Children are told on the outside of each packet when, in their reading of the book, they should open that packet. Not only does the story enthrall them, but young readers can hardly wait until they reach the next milestone so they can open the next incentive.

Each Reading Incentive Kit is prepared for a specific book. For example, there is a Reading Incentive Kit for Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein, and a different RIK for Maybelle in the Soup by Katie Speck.

Parents love the Reading Incentive Kit because it motivates their child to love to read by making a game out of reading. Young readers of all levels love reading with RIK, but it is especially motivational for struggling readers. Recently a grandmother ordered a RIK for her grandson, who is a relatively reluctant reader. She asked him if he thought he could finish reading the book in a week. He replied, “I don’t know, Grandma, it looks kind of hard.”

The next morning at 11 am, the young boy called his grandmother and reported with excitement that he had finished reading the book. With his RIK by his side, he read late into the night and started as early as he could the next day. The grandmother contacted us the next day and ordered six more kits for her other grandchildren.
